Agency for Sustainable Mediterranean Cities and Territories

 

The Agency for sustainable Mediterranean cities and territories goal is to raise the challenge of urban and territorial development through democratic governance in the Mediterranean. 

The main objective of the Agency is to establish a mechanism of exchange of experience, expertise, cooperation and training, allowing to promote integrated and exemplary initiatives of urban and territorial development in the countries of the Union for the Mediterranean. It answers a strong demand of cooperation on behalf of the Mediterranean countries concerning processes, tools and methods, allowing the implementation of an effective urban and territorial planning in a context of regionalization and decentralization.

Public consortium, the Agency was settled on February 3rd, 2012 in Marseilles by its founding members: the French state (DATAR), territorial and local authorities (Région Provence-Alpes-Côte dAzur, Communauté urbaine Marseille Provence Métropole, Communauté dagglomération Toulon Provence Méditerranée, Ville de Marseille), the public institution Euroméditerranée and private sector (Institut de la Méditerranée), joined by the Métropole Nice-Côte dAzur.

The Agency for sustainable Mediterranean cities and territories must allow by its activities to gather and federate the experiences of the Mediterranean countries as regards urban and territorial sustainable development, in an area where this question constitutes a major stake and one of the priorities of the project of the Union for the Mediterranean.

The Agency for sustainable Mediterranean cities and territories has the aim of setting up a device for the share of experiences, expertise, formation and co-operation, in order to promote integrated and exemplary approaches of urban and territorial development between French actors and the countries of the Union for the Mediterranean. It must allow by its activities to gather and federate the experiences of the Mediterranean countries as regards urban and territorial sustainable development, in an area where this question constitutes a major stake and one of the priorities of the project of the Union for the Mediterranean. 

It answers an evolution of the Mediterranean countries to a larger territorialisation of the public policies which goal is to go beyond sectorial logics which prevail today in the public policies to begin in true integrated approaches of territorial and urban development associating the various scales of public action. 

The Agency for sustainable Mediterranean cities and territories has in particular the following roles:

  • formation, marked by the creation of a Cycle of high level seminars bound for decision makers of the Mediterranean countries;
  • territorial co-operation, with exemplary integrated projects integrated of urban and territorial development in Mediterranean countries;
  • territorial futurology, capitalization and sharing of experiences in order to allow the emergence of concepts and operational modes of actions of urban and territorial sustainable development
